Put simply, this report is based on the inspection and testing of all the electrical circuits and accessories in your electrical system. Each circuit will be inspected for visual damage, functionality and signs of wear and tear. Then the wiring of each circuit will undergo a series of tests to make sure the wiring is safe and that the circuit is wired correctly. The report will also determine if items such as earthing, bonding and incoming supply is sufficient. All this data will be contained in a report which we give to the customer.

Pink and Blue Electrics take inspection and testing very seriously. We will typically take four hours to inspect a three bedroom house with an hour back at the office to write up the report and check the test results. Please do not confuse a test report with a safety certificate. Our report will detail what needs to be done to make your installation safe. Only when these faults have been corrected or investigated will the installation be considered satisfactory.

Portable Appliance Testing

What are Portable Electrical Appliances?

Portable Appliances include any electrical equipment connected to a 240 or 110 volt supply socket. In most cases this is equipment that is plugged into a 13 amp electrical socket outlet. Any appliances on your premises that can be used by employers, employees, customers or the public must be maintained in a safe condition. Examples of portable appliances include computers and their accessories, photocopiers, printers, heaters, televisions, VCRs, hairdryers, food mixers, kettles, cleaners, fans, drills, work tools, fridges and freezers and extension leads.

Any electrical appliance connected to a plug needs to be maintained in a good safe working order, even if you cannot physically move the appliance.

Why is it so important that we maintain our equipment?

Sometimes electrical equipment can go wrong. The leads or plugs can become damaged, or sometimes the equipment itself can become faulty. This can lead to an electric shock and electric shocks can kill. Damaged electrical equipment can cause fires. It is important that a system of regular inspection and maintenance is employed to reduce the risk.

Legal Responsibility

The Law requires that electrical equipment at work be maintained in a good safe working order. Portable Appliance Testing is the most common way of complying with the regulations.

What Dangers Could Occur In Portable Appliances?

From experience, appliances in the workplace are often found to have the wrong fuse rating inside the plug top. This can result in appliances failing to automatically switch off if a fault occurs.
Dangerous and lethal wires in the plug top and in the flex may be exposed, frayed or not tightened to the connections properly, putting users and premises at risk of electric shocks and fires.
Many appliances have metal casing which relies on an essential connection between the outer casing and the earth in the wall socket. If this earth connection is incorrectly connected or broken it means that the appliance is not earthed and it can result in a major electric shock to the user should a fault occur.

Why use Pink and Blue to test your appliances?

Unlike many firms, Pink and Blue Electrics only use qualified electricians to do PAT testing – rather than any operator who only needs a 1 day training course. PAT testing is quite frankly a boring job – and unless the operator knows the full consequences of what they are doing it is very easy to miss out tests and inspections due to lack of care and attention. To avoid making these mistakes reports are filled in by hand against a check list. On completion of every ten appliance tests we double check that we haven't missed anything!

Typically to do a thorough PAT test takes on average around 5 minutes. If a firm is doing the tests much faster than this – then they are probably not doing the job properly!
